This is the best hike in Glacier National Park!📍Grinnell Glacier HikeWe saw bighorn sheep, mountain goats, wildflowers, alpine lakes, and breathtaking views for most of the hike. This spot was about 3.5 miles along the trail. Unfortunately we could not go any further since the trial was closed beyond this spot for dangerous snowy conditions when we went in late June. For this trail you’ll go to the Many Glacier park entrance and start the hike from the trailhead near Many Glacier Hotel. Or take

POV: you came to Glacier and your friend didn’t get a vehicle reservation... Here’s what your experience might look like from the West Entrance. - A vehicle reservation is required on Going-to-the-Sun Road via the West Entrance, when going east past the Apgar Check Point, May 24 through September 8, from 6 am to 3 pm. - Vehicle reservations are required to enter the North Fork and Many Glacier, as well. However, you do not need a vehicle reservation to access the Going-to-the-Sun Road via St. Ma

How much is a bird in the hand worth? Catching and banding birds in Glacier National Park is part of the MAPS program – Monitoring Avian Productivity and Survivorship, which is a standardized way to track the health of bird populations, especially in response to climate change. A recent study using MAPS data found that spring is occurring earlier than in past decades and birds aren't responding quickly enough to this shift in timing. These research efforts help us see what’s happening with birds

Curious about plowing progress on Going-to-the-Sun Road? This video from May 30, 2024 shows snow drifts lining the road into the Logan Pass parking lot. Plow crews are hard at work and no one knows exactly when the road will open to the public. Learn about current road conditions at go.nps.gov/gttsr and see more photos and videos at the parks Flickr page, flickr.com/photos/glaciernps.[Video is taken from the passenger seat of a vehicle driving into the Logan Pass parking lot. We didn't think it could get any better than Monday night, but last night's aurora was mind-bending. If you missed it, this Glacier National Park Conservancy timelapse from the Dusty Star Observatory in St. Mary has the goods. Last night brought a strong geomagnetic storm caused by solar eruptions and flares, reaching as far south as Arizona! Video description: An overnight timelapse filmed from the overhead dome of an astronomical observatory shows pulsing, flickering lights dancing in cloudlik

What are glaciers symbols of? Vitality? Power? Curiosity? Loss? How might this change over time? In 2024, we’re celebrating 20 years of USGS mass balance measurements on Sperry Glacier. That’s 20 years of data collection, deliberation, and dedication. This rare, continuous record helps us to understand glacier’s vital signs and connections to climate. We threw some ~*lunar-tic*~ questions at Glacier’s Astronomy Volunteer, Sydney Furman, and she proved to be a 🌟 shining star 🌟 of astronomical knowledge (and lightning-fast improvisation). But actually, Sydney is a professional astronomy interpreter that can also answer your real questions about the science of astronomy. Join her and other space scientists in Glacier National Park for its first ever Astronomy Week September 3 through September 6, 2024! Events will be hosted throughout the park

What stories do feathers tell? Every feather on a bird’s body serves an essential, life-sustaining purpose, like enabling flight, providing insulation, or attracting mates. Birds replace feathers through molting. Breeding, migration, and molting are the most crucial and energy-intensive parts of their life cycle, so they can only do one at a time. To learn more about these complex activities, birds in Glacier are caught as part of the MAPS program – Monitoring Avian Productivity and Survivorship

The first rule of plants is: you do not talk about plants (or at least in this game, you can't use that word!). Suzy is a Biological Science Techician who works at the Native Plant Nursery that helps to grow and revegetate native plants to restore areas of Glacier National Park after disturbances. Root for her as she’s challenged to describe her role in Glacier using only the 1000 most common words in the English language. Audio-described version @ link in bio. | Glacier National Park

2024 marks the 60th anniversary of the Wilderness Act of 1964. Ten years after the act was passed, 92% of Glacier was proposed to be formally designated wilderness. On June 13, 1974, Glacier's wilderness recommendation was submitted to Congress -- but it was never enacted. While Congress determines the status of the proposal, Glacier manages its recommended wilderness according to NPS Policy. In this clip, Shelton Johnson reflects on the importance of telling the stories of the Buffalo Soldiers, regiments of African-American soldiers in the Army who became the first park rangers in the years before the National Park Service was formed. (In fact, we still wear their hats!) Men from these regiments participated in some of the first US government expeditions to what's now Glacier in the late 1800s. Later, during the 1910 fires in Glacier, companies from the 25th Infantry were stationed

The leaves aren’t the only things changing colors—ptarmigan are too! White-tailed ptarmigan turn white in the winter, and they have brown speckled feathers in the summer. This seasonal change helps them blend in. People’s layers also change around this time of the year! If you’re planning to visit Glacier in the fall, be prepared for quickly changing weather and cold nights, along with limited services as roads and facilities begin to close for the season (find current info at nps.gov/glac).
