The drawbridge at Blackness Castle Built in 1868 when the castle underwent a change of use from a prison to an ammunitions depot. The central feature of the castle is its courtyard which you may recognise if you are a fan of Outlander. The distinctive feature of the courtyard is the exposed rock upon which the castle stands. Blackness Castle is a historic fortress located on the banks of the Firth of Forth in Scotland, first built in the 1440’s.
