The viridans streptococci are a large group of commensal streptococcal Gram-positive bacteria species that are α-hemolytic, producing a green coloration on blood agar plates (hence the name "viridans", from Latin "vĭrĭdis", green), although some species in this group are actually γ-hemolytic, meaning they produce no change on blood agar. The word viridans has been derived from the Latin word Viridis as most species of this group gives green color due to alpha hemolysis (partial hemolysis) on blood agar.

Viridans streptococci are commensals in the gastrointestinal, respiratory and female genital tracts and are most prevalent in the oral cavity. They are considered to be of low pathogenicity, apart from their propensity to adhere to cardiac valves and cause endocarditis.
