Abyssal Zone - Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution
2021年2月25日 · What is the abyssal zone? Earth’s vast oceans run deep, bottoming out around 4,000 meters (13,123 feet) in most places, although trenches can form underwater canyons extending another 7,000 meters (22,965 feet). The seafloor and water column from 3,000 to 6,500 meters (9,842 to 21,325 feet) depth is known as the abyssal zone, or the abyss.
Ocean Zones - Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution
The ocean water column is made up of five zones: the sunlight zone (epipelagic), the twilight zone (mesopelagic), the midnight zone (bathypelagic), the abyssal zone (abyssopelagic) and the hadal zone (trenches).
Twilight Zone - Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution
2023年9月29日 · The region teems with life. Recent studies suggest that the biomass of fish in the twilight zone may be ten times greater than previously thought—more than in all the rest of the ocean combined. Animals in the twilight zone range in …
Midnight Zone - Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution
2024年11月4日 · In addition to the lack of light, the midnight zone is characterized by a steady temperature of around 4° Celsius (39° Fahrenheit). Life that exists in this zone must be able to function in cold temperatures and withstand extreme hydrostatic pressure. Pressure varies with depth, and in this zone it ranges from 100 to 400 atmospheres.
Sunlit Zone - Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution
2024年11月4日 · Along the continental shelf the sunlit zone includes all water down to the seafloor, but this zone is restricted to the uppermost layer of the water column once out in the open ocean. Since ocean depths can reach 4,000 meters or more, this represents a thin layer across the top of the open ocean.
How the Ocean Works - Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution
The ocean water column is made up of five zones: the sunlight (epipelagic), twilight (mesopelagic), midnight (bathypelagic), abyssal (abyssopelagic) and hadal zones (trenches). Abyssal Zone; Hadal Zone; Midnight Zone; Sunlit Zone; Twilight Zone
Hadal Zone - Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution
2024年11月4日 · The hadal zone occurs only in trenches, which can extend to 11,000 meters deep (36,000 feet). Hadal regions combined across all oceans make up an area about the size of Australia. The region extending from 6,000 to 11,000 meters is called the hadal, or hadalpelagic, zone after Hades, the Greek god of the underworld.
How does bioluminescence work? - Woods Hole Oceanographic …
Squid living in waters from the sunlit zone to the depths of the midnight zone flash their photophores to scare off predators. Deepwater shrimp in the twilight zone can spew a cloud of glowing mucus into the water to confuse predators. Brittle stars and sea cucumbers on the seafloor of the sunlit zone detach a glowing body part when threatened.
Jellies of the Twilight Zone - Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution
Most jellyfish species live in what is known as the ocean’s “Twilight Zone.” Little is known about this ocean region since it is vastly underexplored, but Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution is on a mission to change that. With our new AUV Mesobot, the institution plans to study the Twilight Zone and the creatures that call it home.
Ocean Trenches - Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution
2019年11月7日 · Recent discoveries in the hadal zone have revealed organisms with proteins and biomolecules suited to resisting the crushing hydrostatic pressure and others able to harness energy from the chemicals that leak out of hydrocarbon seeps and mud volcanoes on …
