I'm using google app engine with Python and have a couple static .png image files but they are all being served with an "image/x-png" content-type. This is a problem when I use a browser like chrome and try to view these images as the content-type is unrecognized, which forces chrome to download it as binary, rather than displaying the image.

PNG-8 - Lossless / Indexed. PNG is a newer format, and PNG-8 (the indexed version of PNG) is really a good replacement for GIFs. Sadly, however, it has a few drawbacks: Firstly it cannot support animation like GIF can (well it can, but only Firefox seems to support it, unlike GIF animation which is supported by every browser).

Try emailing a Windows executable file to someone by changing the file extension to .jpg (or .png). See why the email client refuses to send it, even though the file type, based on the file extension, is absolutely harmless. People/systems invent extensions freely (have you spotted the extension jpg_large)?
