In the early campaigns in North Africa and the Mediterranean theatre, British troops wore KD shorts or slacks with long sleeved Aertex shirts. The paler tan shade of KD was more suited to desert or semi-desert regions than the “dark khaki” or brown serge used in battledress.

The dust-coloured Khaki Drill fabric of the British Army’s tropical uniform was rapidly bleached and faded by the desert conditions. To reflect this, I have chosen quite a pale finish. I have started with a black undercoat because this approach is familiar to most painters.

2021年1月15日 · The concept of having a specific camouflage pattern for British military deployment to arid or desert regions was first seriously considered in the 1980s. The Americans had introduced this type of camouflage in 1981 and were fielding uniforms in the pattern to units in the Sinai and elsewhere by the late 1980s.

Uniforms in the British Army are specific to the regiment (or corps) to which a soldier belongs. Full dress presents the most differentiation between units, and there are fewer regimental distinctions between ceremonial dress, service dress, barrack dress and combat dress, though a level of regimental distinction runs throughout. When painting your troops for the desert, you can afford to add some variation in the colours of the uniforms worn by your figures simply due to battlefield conditions, but aim for a pale khaki look for most of them.
