Vishnu Narayan Bhatkhande was born on August 10, 1860, on Janmashthami, the day which marks the fes-tival celebrating the birth of Lord Krishna according to the Hindu lunar calendar. His family was a middle class Brahmin family of modest means. The family had its roots in Ratnagiri district, not far south of Bombay on the west coast of India.
