Trajan's Column (Italian: Colonna Traiana, Latin: Columna Traiani) is a Roman triumphal column in Rome, Italy, that commemorates Roman emperor Trajan's victory in the Dacian Wars. It was probably constructed under the supervision of the architect Apollodorus of Damascus at the order of the Roman Senate .

Trajan’s Column, monument that was erected in 106–113 CE by the Roman emperor Trajan and survives intact in the ruins of Trajan’s Forum in Rome. The marble column is of the Roman Doric order, and it measures 125 feet (38 meters) high together with the pedestal, which contains a chamber that served as Trajan’s tomb.

Commissioned by Emperor Trajan in 114 to pay homage to himself, Trajan's Column is one of the most important monuments in Rome. Trajan's Column is almost 40 metres high. Its spiral bas-reliefs narrate in detail the unforgettable chapter of history in which the Roman Empire defeated the Dacians as if it were an open book.

The Column of Trajan, built by the architect Apollodorus of Damascus, was inaugurated in 113 AD in the Forum of Trajan, located behind the Basilica Ulpia between the Bibliotheca Ulpia and the Traiani. It was erected in honour of Emperor Trajan to commemorate his victories in Dacia (present-day Romania).

The tower was 173.89 feet high and 34.12 feet wide at the base, more than enough to reach the top of Trajan’s Column. Another possible source for the technology comes from Domenico Fontana’s 1586 design used to lift and lower the Vatican’s obelisk outside St. Peter’s Basilica.
