2020年12月30日 · In July 1927 a scheme to link Tilmanstone Colliery to the Eastern Arm of Dover Harbour by way of a 7.5 mile aerial ropeway was approved and construction commenced shortly after. The idea behind the project was to enable coal to be transported at a lower rate than that charged by the railway.

2015年7月11日 · As part of his long-term plans for the colliery Tilden Smith applied, in September 1926, to Dover Corporation to sanction an aerial ropeway connecting Tilmanstone colliery with Dover Harbour for the conveyance of coal.

An aerial ropeway was built in 1930 to link the pit with Dover Harbour; this included tunnelling through the cliff at Dover to deliver the coal to a 5,000 ton bunker at the harbour. [7] It was little used after 1935, and was dismantled in 1954. [11] In 1945, the workforce was 914, with 631 being employed sub-surface and 283 above. [12]

The aerial ropeway was constructed in 1927 to transport coal to Dover Docks from Tilmanstone colliery. It was an attempt by the Colliery to break the hold that the railway companies had on the transport of coal. The ropeway comprised of a monocable raised on pylon standards fixed to concrete plinths.

The aerial ropeway at The White Cliffs of Dover was designed to deliver coal to the nearby port. At the time, railway transport was too slow and too expensive, so an aerial ropeway was built to take coal from Tilmanstone mine to Dover Harbour’s eastern arm.

Eventually, plans were granted for an aerial ropeway to be built, conveying coal from Tilmanstone Colliery to Dover Harbour over a distance of seven and a half miles, with approval of the Railway & Canal Commission. In February 1927, an estimate of £30,000 to construct the ropeway was revised to £61,195.

2017年5月26日 · At Tilmanstone, the one productive colliery, all the buildings have disappeared under new industrial developments, the only remaining colliery building is the power house for the aerial ropeway halfway along its course from Tilmanstone to the Eastern Docks at Dover.

A ropeway linking Tilmanstone Colliery (see associated Monument record) with Dover docks was opened in 1929-30. The ropeway consisted of three sections.
