The Southern knew that these cars, which it eventually nicknamed Big Johns, would provide a much more efficient way to ship grain than 40-foot, 40-ton boxcars; and this would enable the railroad to drastically reduce rates on large shipments, allowing it to better compete with trucks and barges... and other railroads!

2020年5月25日 · Fenton Wells has built several pulpwood flat cars that reflect Southern Railway prototypes. He sent his prototype details and model building tips to share with blog readers. Pulp and paper products were always major commodities for the Southern Railway. Their biggest customer was Champion paper in Canton, North Carolina, on the old Murphy Branch.

The Southern Railway Historical Association archives contain scans of more than 200 freight car Specs and about 225 “Card Records”. The passenger car “P” specs and P-card lists are still a long way from being scanned but that work is underway.
