Ocean pollution and debris are harming coastal communities that depend upon the sea for livelihoods, as well as endangered species and deep-sea marine life.

Thousands of shipping containers lost at sea do not have water-tight seals. Some containers may last longer on the surface of the ocean, but most of them will sink within fifteen months, creating a serious environmental hazard.

In total 221 containers were lost at sea in 2023, out of 250 million transported. Of the containers lost, about 33% were recovered. This represents the lowest losses since the start of the survey in 2008, and a significant improvement on the previous lowest-ever loss of 661 containers in 2022.
