Byakuya's zanpakutō is Senbonzakura (千本桜, literally "Thousand cherry blossoms"). Its Shikai is triggered by the command "scatter" (散れ, chire). In the English manga the phrase is translated incorrectly at the start of volume fourteen.

The true form of Senbonzakura Kageyoshi is created by Byakuya's blood, which glows and turns into spiritual energy, mixing with the tiny blades of his Bankai. This unites the scattered petals into complete glowing swords, numbering in the thousands, which form four rows.

In order to activate this Shikai, the user has to say the command: Scatter, Senbonzakura (散れ ・ 千本桜, "Chire, Senbonzakura"; Japanese for "Scatter, Thousand Cherry Blossoms"), with the Zanpakutō positioned vertically in front of his body, with the tip of the blade pointed upwards.
