The EMD F3 is a 1,500-horsepower (1,100 kW) B-B freight- and passenger-hauling carbody diesel locomotive produced between July 1945 and February 1949 by General Motors’ Electro-Motive Division. Final assembly was at GM-EMD's La Grange, Illinois plant.

Santa Fe intended to use their FT's as 4-unit 5400 HP locomotives, so 101LA was quickly renumbered to 100BC, "B" being a cab-less booster and "C" being equipped with a cab. A new A-B-B-A set was built and numbered 101LABC, giving two full A-B-B-A locomotive sets.

2024年12月18日 · Following wartime restrictions, which had prevented EMD from implementing a number of improvements with the original FT, the F3 sold more than 1,800 examples during its four-year production run. The locomotive could be found in service on nearly all of the major railroads and furthered the industry's efforts to complete dieselization.

Production: 1948 & 1949. The 2333 F3 AA diesels of 1948 were an entirely new look and direction for Lionel. Up to that point in time, Lionel's motive power fleet consisted of several uninspiring black steam locomotives and a single -- darkly painted -- GG1.

EMD's first real model change following the FT was the F3. Upgraded to a 1500 HP rating and featuring greatly improved brake, throttle, and electrical systems as well as a new carbody, the F3 set the pattern for the next decade of locomotive production.

Santa Fe had concentrated on early F3 purchases for use as passenger locomotives in order to dieselize all of the remaining major passenger trains on the system and by the time that was accomplished, the F7 was ready to enter production.
