Ridged sutures refer to an overlap of the bony plates of the skull in an infant, with or without early closure. The sutures or anatomical lines where the bony plates of the skull join together can be easily felt in the newborn infant.

The sutures and fontanelles are needed for the infant's brain growth and development. During childbirth, the flexibility of the sutures allows the bones to overlap so the baby's head can pass through the birth canal without pressing on and damaging their brain.

Suture frequently overlap each other ("over-riding") and fontanelle size varies. Within 24 hours, edema and molding will already show improvement. Infants have very short necks, but they should have full range of motion from side to side, and the neck should appear symmetric.
