2015年9月16日 · ALMOST 30 years had passed since the last sighting of Allonautilus scrobiculatus when this creature swam in front of Peter Ward’s camera last month, deep below the sea off Papua New Guinea.

Nautilidae, both extant and extinct, are characterized by involute or more or less convolute shells that are generally smooth, with compressed or depressed whorl sections, straight to sinuous sutures, and a tubular, generally central siphuncle. [5]

The Nautilida constitute a large and diverse order of generally coiled nautiloid cephalopods that began in the mid Paleozoic and continues to the present with a single family, the Nautilidae which includes two genera, Nautilus and Allonautilus, with six species.

Their muscular hood partly closes their shell opening when hiding. Octopuses are their only predator as they can crack their hard shell. Nautiluses have simple, pinhole eyes that lack lenses and most likely form blurry images. They are hunted for their shells, which are used in trinkets.

A nautilus can completely hide itself in its shell by blocking the opening with a leathery hood formed from two specially folded tentacles. DESCRIPTION: HABITAT: The chambered nautilus lives in deep fore reefs (at about 330 feet to 2,300 feet) of the tropical Indo-Pacific.

Nautilus is a marine cephalopod genus in the mollusk family Nautilidae. Species in this genus differ significantly, morphologically, from the two nautilus species in the adjacent sister-taxon Allonautilus. [2]

Commonly recorded displays include crypsis (hiding), in addition to what Hanlon and Messenger (1996) refer to as deimatic (threatening, startling, frightening, or bluffing) behaviors and protean (unpredictable or erratic) escape maneuvers.
