The Knights Templar, a Christian military order, gained prominence during the Crusades and utilized their skills as knights on horseback to defend the faith. The symbolism associated with the image of a knight on horseback represents a pursuit of justice and the upholding of noble ideals.

The Grand Masters of the Knights Templar during the later 12th and the 13th century used a double-sided seal which showed a representation of The Dome of the Rock (or a circular dome of the Church of the Holy Sepulchre) on one side, and the Order's symbol of two knights on one horse on the other side.

As part of a campaign to discredit the Templars, some suggested the two knights symbolized the homosexuality said to be rampant within the order.

In the 12th and 13th Centuries, the Grand Masters of the Knights Templar used a double sided “Great Seal”, one side bearing an impression of the “ Dome of the Rock ” and the other the well-known emblem of the Order, two knights riding on a single horse. The inscription surrounding the Seal varied according to the Grand Master.

The knight on the horse is a symbol found on the seals of some of the highest hierarchs of the Knights Templar. For example, the seal of Rustan de Com, Commander of the Order in Rishranche, 1232 depicted a knight on horseback carrying a shield with a cross.
