Hardening A2 tool steel (beginner) - Practical Machinist
2017年12月9日 · A2 is air harden steel. After holding 1750°F for 20-30 minutes remove from furnace and air cool. Remove form foil, polish (or surface grind) to remove the oxide and to get clean, shiny metal surface. Temper at 510°F - 530°F for about 2 hours. This will give the metal a nice blue finish and about 56RC hardness.
Rigid tapping hardened steel advice? - Practical Machinist
2005年3月5日 · Anyone have experience rigid tapping hardened steel? Have a job of tapping (3) 5/16-18 holes, ~ 3/4 dp. in A2 tool steel, 58-60 Rc. Should be able to drill thru the workpiece so as to not blind tap. Ordered an OSG EXOCARB-VX carbide tap and the recommended carbide drill. They suggest a tapping SFM of 3-10. Sound about right?
General | Tapping Hardened steel - Practical Machinist
2006年5月5日 · Hello Everyone I have a hardened piece of steel I need to tap 1/4x28tpi. The Steel is a Fed Ordnance M14 reciever. It is tempered steel and I was barely able to drill through it with high speed steel. Currently the hole is .219 but I plan to use an Number one carbide drill which should be .228...
General | hardening mild steel - Practical Machinist
2006年6月5日 · I've tried that mixture, with minimal results. Can't recall the formula right now.If you want to harden mild steel, aquarium charcoal in a sealed crucible will give the best penetration, better than Kasenit. It will get file hard, and also will be brittle,so you may want to draw the temper some.
Making Hardened steel soft again? - Practical Machinist
2003年1月24日 · You can probably cut it with a carbide meant for hardened steel. I use the IMCO Power Feeds often on hardened steels. One thing to think about if it is indeed Case Hardened then you will want to check how much you are taking out. Typical Cases are like .020 to .060 deep and if you want to Re Harden then you need to Re Case and Re Harden Good ...
Heat Treatment 101 - Practical Machinist
2020年9月25日 · This text includes information regarding metallurgy, cast irons, and ultra-high-strength steels. With a focus on best practices and procedures when heat treating iron and steel, this text includes plenty of examples, charts and graphics. The Heat Treatment and Annealing of Aluminum and Its Alloys
How to Heat Treating 1075 Carbon Steel - Practical Machinist
2014年1月4日 · Orange doesn't hurt, but if you blister the steel, you've ruined it. Red can be as low as 800 or 900º in a dark shop. That's not enough to reach the critical temp. necessary to harden the steel. You should use a fine tooth file that is in good condition to test for hardness. The finer teeth will cut harder steel than a coarse cut file will.
Tig welding of hardened steel? - Practical Machinist
2010年3月11日 · The main potential problem with welding hardened or hardenable steels is when the weld and HAZ is chilled by the surrounding cold metal, tries to harden and shrink at the same time, and either cracks or ends up too brittle for service. Iron alloys have different crystal structures at different temperatures.
Trying to harden air hardening steel with a torch
2005年1月19日 · This is a steel I like a lot, though have not used it much recently. Not really ideal for your app, it is for mine and I am somewhat familiar with it. Notice on this one that in the hardening charts you can tailor the characteristics of the finished product by where (temperature) you choose to harden it from, in relatively small increments.
Requirements for milling hardened steels - Practical Machinist
2009年5月14日 · In general, hard milling involves cutting primarily tool steel or precipitation hardening stainless steel, such as 15-5 or 17-4, that has been hardened to at least 50 HRC. After a workpiece is roughed in the soft state, it is sent to the furnace for hardening and then finish machined with coated carbide, ceramic or PCBN tools.
