This species is hard to mistake for any other snake in Delaware! Their bright green color makes for excellent camouflage against the foliage. They’re highly arboreal and spend much of their time climbing in low vegetation. Look for them coiled and sleeping in shrubs, tangles of vines, or other thick vegetation, especially if it’s near water.

Delaware snakes inhabit an area right on the north south boundary of common United States snake territory. Of the nineteen species of Delaware snakes, all of them are found in the south in an area known as the Delmarva (Delaware, Maryland and Virginia) peninsula.

Adults are brownish-green with a black checkerboard pattern and usually have a yellowish stripe down their back center. They’re found in a variety of habitats and feed on frogs, fish and slugs.

Common Garter Snake. The common garter snake is greenish-brown, usually with a central yellow stripe flanked by a checkered pattern on the back. Adults are about 2.5 feet long. Although they are associated with aquatic habitats, they may also be found far from water. Common garter snakes feed primarily on frogs, fish and even garden slugs.
