The book of Genesis was written by Moses. Genesis is the book of beginnings: the beginning of creation, the beginning of man the beginning of sin, and the beginning of God's plan for the redemption of sinning man.

Genesis is a name borrowed from the Greek. It signifies the original, or generation: fitly is this book so called, for it is a history of originals—the creation of the world, the entrance of sin and death into it, the invention of arts, the rise of nations, and especially the planting of the church, and the state of it in its early days.

There is a wealth of commentaries on Genesis. In this post, I will briefly describe five of the most generally helpful commentaries available on the first book of the Bible. 1. Gordon J. Wenham — Genesis 1–15 and Genesis 16–50 (Word Biblical Commentary, 1987, 1994).
