The main representations that each source file goes through are AST in front end, RTL in middle end, and the assembly representation in back end.

With the backdrop of these abstraction mechanisms and the need for retargetability, we identify three parts of the GCC system: the compiler generation framework architecture, the build system and the compiler operation architecture.

We first discuss the basic goals and architecture of the GCC system. This is used to understand the GCC source organization. We then describe building a native GCC compiler. Although described in the installation notes of GCC, we examine the process in more detail with a aim to eventually build hacking abilities.

Through the introduction of a new language-independent intermediate representation, we extend the current GCC architecture to include. a powerful mid-level optimizer and add link-time interprocedural analysis and optimization capabilities.

Open-source GCC compiler has the advantage of high-level optimiza-tion ability and portability. Aiming at specific target platform, this paper carried out practical research and development of compiler based on GCC.
