The Thunderchief was rapidly withdrawn from USAF service after the end of the Vietnam War. Only 833 F-105 Thunderchiefs had been built. Having lost nearly 50% of that production figure in Vietnam, the F-105 was by military standards almost no longer combat-effective.

The USAF operated the F-105D extensively in the air campaign against North Vietnam called Rolling Thunder. Although designed as a nuclear strike aircraft, the F-105 could carry a total of over 12,000 pounds of conventional ordnance -- a heavier bomb load than a World War II B-17.

The Thunderchief was designed in the early 1950s as a single-seat, single-engined fighter bomber with the primary role of nuclear attack. The entire design was optimised for this role which, when the aircraft came to be used for tactical strike using conventional weapons, had both advantages and disadvantages.
