Reculver was begun by AD 185-200, it was one of 3 forts constructed to regular first-century design. It was garrisoned by the first cohort of Baetasii, an auxillary infantry unit from Germany. During the 4th century the settlement declined. Occupation ceased around AD 375, as very few coins after this date have been found.
