All five female African elephants at Cheyenne Mountain Zoo are artists. Lucky paints on canvas and makes individual signature trunk prints. Kimba and the rest of the herd; Jambo, LouLou and Missy, create canvas and paper paintings. Lucky was the first African elephant at the Zoo to begin painting in the mid-1990s.

We use water-based acrylic paints and either poster board or canvas. The mahout uses a palette to mix the colors and the brushes are custom made so elephants can comfortably hold them and paint with their trunks. Every piece begins with a blank canvas and a vision.
