Egg tempera is often said to date back to ancient Egypt. Egyptian artists “tempered” pigments with a variety of water-based binders: gum arabic, animal glue, and casein. Museums and conservators refer to these paints generically as “temperas”, which makes it difficult to know what binder was actually used.
