The Traditional Latin Mass as typically experienced today (and described in other comments here) is nothing like the Mass in the 1950s. Oh, it was the same Missal, or nearly so, but whereas today TLM priests and parishioners relish the beauty of what was lost, back then, it was seen as pedestrian. Something to get through.

2023年12月31日 · I was baptized at Easter vigil and it took over 3 hours because they said it in 3 different languages. Would've been completely avoided if the whole thing was done in Latin. Same with going to Mass in other countries, Latin makes the Mass universally understood (with the help of a missal) no matter who is attending.

Also consider the average Latin Mass parishioner specifically goes there for a more reverent liturgical experience and the priests know this which is part of the reason why they take the mass so seriously.

Not aware of "small town", but I grew up in a major city in the Northeast USA in the 1950's and 1960's. Mass was full of Gregorian chant, even the Low Mass. Many families attended local Catholic schools. Everyone took Latin in high school and college. In my Catholic girls academy, I belonged to a singing group called Schola.

To say that the Mass as celebrated by the missal of Paul VI is "less Catholic" than any Mass that came beforehand is treading dangerous waters. It is the same Mass as was celebrated beforehand, only with a new missal or "form." It is the same rite, that of the Latin Church.

2022年2月22日 · Generally you can use a missal you can either get a generic missal which doesn’t include the prayers which change from day to day for like less than $20. Or you can get a big copy which does include the different prayers for over $50. But I have an app called iPieta which has a day to day mass for the Latin mass.
