The Bunyip Elder reveals the plot of Boss Cass and how his attempt to rid the world of mammalian life resulted in the disappearance of Ty's parents by entrapping them into the Dreaming. He acts as the mission-giver, providing the objectives of collecting the Talismans before Boss Cass can.

Bunyips are a ancient race of bird-like creatures which live in The Dreaming. There are three notable Bunyips: their leader, the Bunyip elder Nandu Gili, protector of the Bunyip Gauntlet Maliyan, and Thigana (who is the only one who can fly). There also exists unnamed Bunyips called Shooter Bunyips, who are the guardians of Bunyip City.

Ty's parents had defeated the evil Boss Cass in battle many years before and in retaliation, Cass imprisoned them in the Dreamtime realm.

He also sometimes pilots mechas referred to as "Bunyips" to take out some enemies. While playing with some Bilbie friends, Ty stumbles into a hole where he encounters the Bunyip Elder, a mysterious spirit-beast entity from the Dreaming (an otherworld where his kind reside).
