Uniforms in the British Army are specific to the regiment (or corps) to which a soldier belongs. Full dress presents the most differentiation between units, and there are fewer regimental distinctions between ceremonial dress, service dress, barrack dress and combat dress, though a level of regimental distinction runs throughout. The British Army purchased the caps from a British hatmaker which sources its pelts at an international auction. The hatmakers purchase between 50 and 100 black bear skins each year at a cost of about £650 each.

The first picture of a brown beret appears on page 140 of the June 1935 Journal which shows a group of officers and soldiers awaiting a police escort prior to entering Cairo. All of the group are wearing the normal service caps with the exception of Tpr Dobson who is sporting a brown beret.
