The flag of the Azerbaijan Soviet Socialist Republic was a plain red flag with a golden hammer and sickle and a gold-bordered red star in its upper canton and an horizontal dark blue band on the bottom fourth, representing the Caspian Sea.

The flag of the Azerbaijan SSR was first adopted in 1920, and was a red flag with a yellow crescent and star in the left upper corner. [1] From the second part of 1921 to 1922, Azerbaijan SSR used a red flag with the yellow Cyrillic letters АССР (ASSR). [1]

According Vexilologie 9-10 there were two patterns for Azerbaijan: pattern of 1952-1956, and pattern after 1956. Chages are in the size, position and design of the hammer-and-sickle and star.
