In 1687, Isaac Newton included an explicit reference to the Philippines in his classic Philosophiæ Naturalis Principia Mathematica by mentioning Leuconia, the ancient Ptolemaic name for the Philippines.

The recorded history of the Philippines between 900 and 1565 begins with the creation of the Laguna Copperplate Inscription in 900 and ends with the beginning of Spanish colonization in 1565. The inscription records its date of creation in 822 Saka (900 CE).

Recorded Philippine history began in the 13th century when 10 datus from Borneo, each with a hundred of his kinsmen, landed in what is now Panay Island in the Visayas. Ibaloi mummies placed in caves in central Luzon between 10th and 18th centuries still survive.
