Relatively rare and elusive throughout its range, the harpy eagle is found from southern Mexico (incl. Chiapas, Oaxaca and the Yucatán states) and south through Central America, into South America to as far south as Argentina.

The harpy eagle is an impressive raptor that can grow to be up to 3.2 feet in length and weigh up to 9.9 pounds. Its wingspan can reach lengths of over 6 feet, enabling it to soar though its rainforest habitat with ease and reach speeds of over 30 miles per hour while hunting.

These great birds are named after harpies, the predatory “frightful, flying creatures with hooked beak and claws” of Greek mythology. This dark gray bird of prey has a very distinctive look, with feathers atop its head that fan into a bold crest when the bird feels threatened.

Harpy eagle pair nests 40ft to 60ft high above on the trees. They use green leaves and twigs like other birds only to weave their nest. They are one of the most powerful and dangerous predators of the animal kingdom.
