Belah Viaduct - Forgotten Relics
Belah was the centrepiece of an ambitious trans-Pennine connection between Barnard Castle and Tebay, involving a tortuous climb up to Stainmore summit, 1,370 feet above the sea. The line was a creation of Thomas Bouch, a talented engineer whose many grand achievements would later be overshadowed by Britain’s most notorious railway disaster.

The South Durham and Lancashire Union Railway (SD&LUR) built a railway line linking the Stockton and Darlington Railway near Bishop Auckland with the Lancaster and Carlisle Railway (the West Coast Main Line) at Tebay, via Barnard Castle, Stainmore Summit and Kirkby Stephen.

THE TEBAY - INGLETON RAILWAY - ERIC HALL
The viaduct here was actually designed by Joseph Locke and John Errington, the civil engineers for the Lancaster and Carlisle Railway, and was built between 1857 and 1861. It's a Grade 2 listed structure, and that is hardly a surprise given its magnificent design and beautiful setting.

2023年8月8日 · My curiosity about the old Stainmore line, between Barnard Castle and Tebay, continues. I developed an unlikely urge to see the site of (rather than the sight of) the Belah railway viaduct. Designed by Thomas Bouch (he of the Tay Bridge disaster), it opened in 1861 and was closed 101 years later.
