2024年6月14日 · The Monument was established in 1924 to protect its distinctive pinnacles, columns, spires, and balanced rocks that seem to defy gravity. The remarkable rock spires, known as ‘hoodoos,’ are erosional features formed in the Rhyolite Canyon Tuff.

Typical examples of the rhyolite porphyry are white to gray in color and contain abundant phenocrysts of glassy quartz and feldspar up to several millimeters in diameter. Black shiny biotite in minute flakes is also abundant.

Three examples are represented by spires of vertically fractured rhyolite that rise above the waters of the San Basilio embayment as sea stacks. Two such clusters can be visited at Punta Mencenares on approach by boat from the southeast into the main bay.

Loop trails wind through the pinnacles, spires, balanced rocks, and grottos of volcanic tuff throughout of the upland area.
