2024年10月14日 · Deep sea fishing company Sealord has introduced innovative measures that are successfully reducing the number of seal deaths that occur when it is fishing. Seal deaths on Sealord vessels have dropped by around a third in the last year. Figures show 49 seals were captured in the 2023/24 fishing year, down from 68 in 2022/23 and 78 in 2021/22.

Sealord vessel the Rehua has been using SEDs with state-of-the-art underwater cameras. The cameras check seal and fish behaviour and monitor how the SEDs are performing. Seal deaths on Sealord vessels dropped by around a third in the last year, at a time when the general fur seal population is rapidly increasing.

Rehua is a factory freezer trawler owned by Sealord. The Sealord company was purchased by the government as a partial settlement for Māori claims. Fisheries settlements have led to a significant Māori presence in the fishing industry in New Zealand.
