In its simplest form, a telescope consists of 2 optical elements—an objective and an eyepiece separated by the sum of their focal lengths. These may be either refractive or reflective elements (lenses or mirrors, respectively). While the objective always has positive power, the eyepiece may have either positive or negative power.

Telescopes that make use of the refractive property of lenses are called refracting telescopes or refractors. If a refractor is to have a large light-gathering power (a necessity for astronomical observations), the lenses must be quite large.

The first known refracting telescope was Galileo’s design of the refractor in 1609 using a convex lens as the objective and a concave lens as the eyepiece. This design has no intermediary focus and so the image produced was non-inverted and upright.
