Identifying human races in terms of skin colour, at least as one among several physiological characteristics, has been common since antiquity.

Skin color continued to be a marker of racial difference, but its importance in race science receded to being more of an indicator of a superior “pure race” or an inferior “mixed race” rather than a measure, in itself, of ability and potential.

We inherit our skin color from our ancestors, and so it is obviously a trait that is tied to our biology and genetics. But what is it that brought about such a diversity of human skin colors? And how can knowledge about the natural history of skin inform questions surrounding societal notions of skin color and our health?
