With the advent of molecular phylogenetics, arthropods were found to be monophyletic and placed within a clade of molting animals, the ecdysozoans, with nematodes and six other phyla.

In this Review, we discuss recent advances in understanding arthro-pod origins and relationships from the fields of molecular systematics, palaeontology, morphology and ‘evo-devo’. We show that the source of Darwin’s discomfort about arthropod origins, although not entirely removed, has been substantially alleviated.
