Learning Ocean Science through Ocean Exploration is an updated curriculum for teachers of Grades 6-12 that takes lesson plans that were developed for NOAA ocean explorations and the Ocean Explorer website and presents them in a comprehensive scope and sequence through subject area categories that cut across individual expeditions.

We’ve divided our lessons into five categories: oceans, waves and currents, marine animals and adaptations, ocean conservation, and ocean-related science, technology, and careers. Rather than pair each lesson or section with a literacy lesson, we’ve included broad suggestions for incorporating literacy into an ocean unit.

The curriculum, titled An Introduction to Our Dynamic Ocean, is based on the Ocean Literacy Essential Principles and Fundamental Concepts (OLEP) and provides teachers with a series of hands-on lesson plans/activities that are classroom-ready and scientifically accurate.

The NEMO curriculum has 23 lessons in marine science, biology, chemistry, geology, physics, technology, and marine policy that can be used to support a course or club or prepare a team for a National Ocean Sciences Bowl competition.
