Saint Bernard Abbey is a community of Catholic Benedictine monks in Cullman, Alabama, seeking God together through lives of prayer and work.

Hidden away in the countryside of northern Alabama, the Shrine of the Most Blessed Sacrament is a peaceful place of spiritual renewal and prayer. The Shrine, visited by thousands each year, is also home to Our Lady of the Angels Monastery, where the Poor Clares of Perpetual Adoration live a life consecrated to God.

An abbey is simply a monastery under the leadership of an abbot. St. Bernard Abbey in Cullman, Alabama, is such a place. The 30 men who make up the monastery community share life in common, and that includes prayer, work, housing, property, meals, recreation, and more.

The Ave Maria Grotto is home to the fruitful labor of Brother Joseph Zoettl, OSB. Br. Joseph was a Benedictine monk of St. Bernard Abbey. Originally from Landschutt, Bavaria-Germany, a young Br. Joseph found himself headed to America to pursue monastic life at Alabama's only Benedictine Abbey.
