The gelada (Theropithecus gelada, Amharic: ጭላዳ, romanized: č̣əlada, Oromo: Jaldeessa daabee), sometimes called the bleeding-heart monkey or the gelada baboon, is a species of Old World monkey found only in the Ethiopian Highlands, living at elevations of 1,800–4,400 m (5,900–14,400 ft) above sea level.

2008年9月3日 · On average, males are larger than females and marked sexual dimorphism is characteristic of the species, with females averaging around two-thirds the size of males (Krentz 1993; Jolly 2007). Females average around 11 kg (24.3 lb) while males weigh 18.5 kg (40.8 lb) (data compiled by Jolly 2007).

Sexual dimorphism: On males, the hourglass-shaped skin is bright red outlined by white hair. The females, on the other hand, have a less conspicuous patch of skin. Females in estrus, however, have a bright patch with a ‘necklace’ of blisters on it. The Geladas are distributed in the mountainous regions of the central Ethiopian plateau.

Geladas are large, stocky monkeys, with females weighing about 28 pounds and males about 40 pounds. Both have dense, brownish to buff fur on the back and head, with lighter fur on the chest and belly, and dark colored faces (with pale eyelids) and extremities. Males have a long cape of hair on the back.

Gelada baboons live in groups of one male with several females and their offspring. These groups are called one male units, or OMUs. Associated OMUs may travel in the same area making up a second level of organization called the band.

They have short brown fur, and both males and females have a bare pectoral patch that is usually triangular and fringed with white hairs. These brown and grey primates are Old World monkeys that do bear some similarities to baboons. Twice the size of females, males are as big as a large dog and are equipped with vampiric canines, which they often bare at each other as a display of dominance or aggression.
