Legong (Balinese: ᬮᬾᬕᭀᬂ, légong) is a form of Balinese dance. It is a refined dance form characterized by intricate finger movements, complicated footwork, and expressive gestures and facial expressions.

Another Legong dance was created in the mid 1930s-1950s with the name Legong Keraton, a solo dance but lacks specific terminology. The structure of Legong The Legong dance is divided into four or five parts such as papeson (entrance), pengawak (main part), pengecet (elaboration of pengawak), pengipuk (in several stories), and pekaad (ending).

Legong was created at the turn of the eighteenth century by combining elements from older traditions such as gambuh and the sanghyang dedari trance dance with its many ancient animal movements. Early in its development a variant of legong was performed by young boys, but it was rechoreographed for girls by royal command.

The word Legong derives from the word “leg” which means dance moves that are supple or flexible and “gong ” which means gamelan. “Legong ” thus contains the meaning of a bound dance motion (especially its accent) by the gamelan that surrounds it. Gamelan is used to accompany the Legong dance named Gamelan Semar Pagulingan.

Legong dance performances first appeared in the 19th century and they say that a prince in Sukawati, in the Central Bali Highlands, fell ill and during his fever, he had a dream where a pair of local maidens danced to the music of the gamelan orchestra.
