Experts in the field of historic paint have produced enough evidence to repaint the ship in colours that despite controversy are believed to be correct for the time of the Battle of Trafalgar. When I last visited Portsmouth they had begun the process of repainting Victory and I got some photos in good natural light.

The HMS Victory crosses the T in a most unorthodox naval maneuver, leading to the defeat of the Franco-Spanish fleet. Admiral Nelson would lose his life as a result of the epic battle, and forever earn a revered place in the minds and hearts of his countrymen.

This painting is of HMS 'Victory', anchored off St Helens, Isle of Wight upon her return to England 4th December 1806, having sailed from Gibraltar on 3rd November after a temporary refit following the damage she received at Trafalgar.

This painting portrays the opening moments of the Battle of Trafalgar, when two British divisions initialize separate but simultaneous breaches of the French and Spanish battle line. Admiral Nelson’s division has broken into the northern segment with his flagship, the HMS Victory.
