We review a robust literature from the field of psychology documenting the benefits of gesture for communication for both speakers and listeners, as well as its important cognitive functions for organizing spoken language, and facilitating problem-solving, learning, and memory.

1999年11月1日 · In this review, I begin by examining gesture when it stands on its own, substituting for speech and clearly serving a communicative function. When called upon to carry the full burden of communication, gesture assumes a language-like form, with structure at word and sentence levels.

Gestural communication plays a significant role in the way humans interact with one another. It encompasses various non-verbal cues, from hand movements and facial expressions to posture and proximity. Gesture is a silent yet powerful language that conveys emotions, intentions, and messages without needing spoken words.

Gesture can play a role in communication and thought at many timespans. We explore, in turn, gesture’s contribution to how language is produced and understood in the moment; its contribution to how we learn language and other cognitive skills; and its contribution to how language is created over generations, over childhood, and on-the-spot.

We will discuss this hypothesis, providing evidences about the gestural origin of language, focusing on studies investigating the functional relation between manual gesture and speech and the neural circuits involved in their processing and production.
