The scarlet, long-legged flamingoes are found in three major nesting groups in the West Indian region, Great Inagua being one of them (the others are in Yucatan, Mexico, and Bonaire Island in the Netherlands Antilles.)

5. Long Cay. Long Cay is a small off-shore island just northwest of Acklins Island. It lies along the edges of the Bight of Acklins, a large shallow lagoon. To see flamingos head to Flamingo Bay where you’ll usually find the flamingos flocking along the shore. This bay is on the south side of Long Cay. 6. Crooked Island

They pop into view unexpectedly when running along the coastline and inside roadside ponds and creeks. Be on the lookout, because they often appear only as a pink color stain on the horizon.

The American Flamingo, or as it is referred to in the Bahamas – the West Indian Flamingo, is the country’s national bird. This is because one of the largest populations of the American Flamingo is found here.

Seabirds can be found on nearby, offshore islands in season, including the White-tailed Tropicbird. American Flamingos are often seen in appropriate locations, but they move from time to time. Ask the locals where they might be when you are there. They have been seen on the east side of Long Cay and on the west side of Acklins.
