The 17,371 acre Dolly Sods Wilderness in the Monongahela National Forest is part of the National Wilderness Preservation System. It is located in Grant, Randolph, and Tucker Counties, West Virginia. The Dolly Sods Wilderness contains much of the Red Creek drainage and contains bog and heath eco-types, more commonly typical to southern Canada.

Dolly Sods Wilderness has 47 miles of trails, many of which follow old railroad grades and logging roads. Listed below are several possible loop hikes. Fords indicate streams that may be a problem to cross during high water events. There may be additional small stream crossings.

Description: Dolly Sods is an area of high elevation windswept plains on the Allegheny Plateau. The area is well known for its extensive rocky plains, upland bogs, and sweeping vistas. With the elevations in this part of West Virginia ranging from 2,600 feet to over 4,000 feet, the climate and plant life resembles northern Canada.

A stone’s throw from the campground is Dolly Sods Wilderness which offers a unique wilderness hiking opportunity for those looking for adventure. This area features unique scenery and unusual plant communities.

Monongahela National Forest includes 115,000 acres of Wilderness designated under the National Wilderness Preservation System. Two Wilderness Areas were designated in 1975: Dolly Sods and Otter Creek. Three Wilderness Areas were added in 1983: Cranberry, Laurel Fork North and Laurel Fork South.

On Dolly Sods late August sees a fine showing of an interesting creamy-white primitive lily, a species with no common name in general use, but whose scientific genus is Zygadenus. It is to be enjoyed along the Northlands Trail, a circular trail which begins near the Red Creek campgrounds.
