Chikun Local Government Area derives its name from a Gbagyi village named Chikun in the southeastern part of Kujama. The area was originally populated by the Gbagyi people but is now being subsumed by urbanization making it a cosmopolitan part of Kaduna. On 5 July 2021, over 100 secondary school pupils were kidnapped.

Gbagyi people are a large ethnic group that spread across Niger state (Minna, Paiko, Diko), Kaduna State (Zaria, Birnin Gwari, Chikun, Giwa, Kagarko, Chikun Kuyama, Igabi), Nassarawa State (Keffi, Toto, Nassarawa, New Kulo, Gadabuke, Yerwa, Ukya, Nakuse, New Rubochi), Kogi State (Chika) and the Federal Capital Territory.

The population of Chikun LGA is put at 231,582 inhabitants with the dominant tribes in the area being the Gbagyi. Islam and Christianity are the widely practiced religions in the area while the Gbagyi language is extensively spoken in the area.

2021年9月20日 · Gbagyi were the largest among the ethnic groups that inhabited the land proposed for development when Abuja (Federal Capital Territory) was chosen as Nigeria’s federal capital. The result of the relocation was the removal of people from their ancestral homes and spiritual symbols such as Zuma rock.

The most underdeveloped area of Gbagyi land is the northern part of Shiroro LGA, into southern Rafi LGA. The situation is only a little better in Chikun LGA or Kaduna State, especially around Gwagwada and Godani.
