There are four main forest regions in Ontario, each with unique characteristics and species: the Hudson Bay Lowlands in the far north; the boreal forest region in the northern Ontario; the Great Lakes–St. Lawrence forest in southern and central Ontario; the deciduous forest in southern Ontario

It consists mainly of mixed coniferous and broad-leaf woodlands. South of this transition can be found the deciduous woodlands of Southern Ontario. Canada's boreal forest is considered to be the largest intact forest on Earth, with around three million square kilometres still undisturbed by roads, cities and industrial development. [9]

The boreal forest is a huge, resilient and constantly changing ecosystem, driven by the long term succession of tree species and the animals which inhabit them. The poster map graphically depicts the challenges of sustainable forest management of this beautiful and expansive resource.

Portions of two forest sections of Rowe’s (1972) forest region classification are located in this ecoregion: the Northern Coniferous Forest Section (west) and the Central Plateau Forest Section (east). Both forest sections are within the Boreal Forest Region. This ecoregion comprises a substantial portion of Ontario’s boreal forest.
