Ballincollig Castle is a Norman castle to the south of the town of Ballincollig, County Cork, Ireland, built after the Norman invasion of Ireland. In its prime, the castle was inhabited by the Barrett family, who had control of the local area. [2] The castle still stands today, albeit largely in ruin. [3]

2014年5月11日 · The Barretts were also the builders of Ballincollig Castle during the reign of Edward III (1327-1377) and was the chief castle in the Barrony of Barretts. From what records show, this SEEMS to be the most notable Barrett stronghold in Cork during the early 1400’s until the purchase of Castle Barrett in the early 1600’s.

By 1600 the Barretts had lost Ballincollig Castle due to infighting, [7] with Sir Walter Coppinger gaining full ownership of the lands in 1630. [12] By October 1601, the Barrett family acquired Castlemore (or Castle More; later called Castle Barrett), which had previously been owned by the Earl of Desmond.

Unable to acquire Ballincollig castle, Andrew and Catherine made their chief residence at Castlebarrett, at the northern end of the lordship. One junior line of the Ballincollig branch survived for a period. William son of Edmund had one younger brother, James, apparently granted Curraleigh (wherein is situated the Iniscarra dam) by his father.

However, by 1600, the Barretts lost Ballincollig Castle due to infighting, and Castlemore (Castle Barrett) was acquired by the family. This castle was later damaged by Oliver Cromwell’s army in 1645 and ultimately destroyed after the Battle of the Boyne in 1690.

The Barretts had travelled to Ireland with the Normans in 1169 and by the 15th century, they had become tenants of the MacCarthys, to whom they paid rent.
