2020年3月26日 · Shawls were popular as well, particularly cashmere shawls (Fig. 12), frequently imitations from mills in Europe, as opposed to the extremely expensive imports from India (Laver 175). The grace with which a woman wore her shawl was a practiced art that reflected the wearer’s taste and manners (Severa 14-15).

Shawl (Mantel) – A basic wool, cashmere, knit, or in summer lace shawl provided the next layer. Winter shawls were embellished with embroidery or trimmed in fringe, ruffles, flounces or braid. Plaid tartan was especially popular in the ’40s and ’50s.

In the 1830s, shawls of silk crepe, plain, embroidered, or with printed designs, were worn, and embroidered Chinese crepe shawls continued to be fashionable during the 1840s. Shawls of printed satin were also fashionable at the beginning of the period.

Gowns were worn off the shoulder and featured wide flounces that reached to the elbow, often of lace. They were worn with sheer shawls and opera-length gloves. Other greatly worn hand accessories were a new kind of gloves, usually reaching the forearm in length. These gloves had a lace trim in sophisticated flower designs.

The different coloured weft threads of each section are interlocked where they meet, which is an indicator that the shawl is probably of French origin. It is 64" long and 68" wide altogether, but the corners seem to have become stretched out.

2024年12月24日 · Early silk paisley shawl with fringed border. Cream jacquard with floral pattern and paisley boarder in autumn colors of olive, rust, brown and gold. Hand tied fringe at all edges. Dates to 1840s-1860s. This shawl was worn by women of the Denny family in early Victorian Brookline, Massachusetts and stored away for over a century and a half.
