Established on 20 August 1942 at Bolling Field, District of Columbia, 12th Air Force was a United States Army Air Forces combat air force deployed to the Mediterranean Theater of World War II. It engaged in operations in North Africa, the Mediterranean, and Western Europe.

2017年8月16日 · Seventy-five years ago during the United States buildup of forces for World War II, the Army Air Forces established the Twelfth Air Force. The numbered air force activated on August 20, 1942 at Bolling Field, Washington, D.C., where it would remain for all of eight days.

By the end of World War II, the Airmen of 12th AF had flown 21 different types of aircraft that included heavy bombers, seaplanes, and light observation planes. They also developed close air support air-ground coordination teams that set a model for other numbered Air Forces.

The 12th Air Force was constituted and activated 20 August 1942 moving to England in the fall. On to North Africa in November 1942 and remaining in the Mediterranean for the duration of World War II. Initially composed of all bomber types and fighters it became a more tactical organization in later 1943 until the conclusion of the conflict.

Barely four months after it was conceived, Twelfth Air Force made its first contributions to World War II. When D-Day arrived for the invasion of North Africa on Nov. 8,1942, Twelfth Air Force was ready to meet its assigned missions. Later, Twelfth Air Force saw action in Sicily, Italy, and Southern France.
