Rutten was born in Tilburg, Netherlands. At the age of six, he developed eczema and severe asthma. His eczema meant he always wore long sleeves, turtle necks and gloves, as well as bandages every night, and his asthma meant he was unable to partake in exercise, and was consequently relatively skinny.

While many of the children he grew up with in the Netherlands were outside playing sports like soccer, young Bas was dealing with health issues that often made him the target of bullies.

According to Sports Illustrated, young Bas was an extremely sickly child and spent much of his youth suffering with chronic eczema. Whenever it struck, his body would "erupt" into nasty lesions and he had to spend up to months in bed, bandaged up and requiring round-the-clock care.
